Investigating Geometry with GeoGebra

Henrico County Public Schools

Dilation of a Figure

READ the instruction below and INTERACT with the GeoGebra applet on the right.

  1. Click on the image and drag it toward point S. What do you observe?

  2. Next, move point F. What happens to the image as the value changes?

  3. Compare the two images in terms of size, shape, position, and orientation. What is the same? What is different?

  4. Now move the image and point S so they trade places. Repeat steps 1-3, do your observations remain the same?

  5. Move point S into the center of the image. Repeat steps 1-3, do your observations remain the same?
Is this always true for any figure? Why?
Sorry, the GeoGebra Applet could not be started. Please make sure that Java 1.4.2 (or later) is installed and activated. (click here to install Java now)
